Budding Libertarian: A Treatment

INT. CAR – DAY

Father drives as Gavin sits in the rear, passenger seat, buckled in his carseat.
A newscast just broadcasted a story about education budget cuts.

GAVIN
Why are they yelling?

FATHER
Because the are upset.  The government is
taking away some of their money.

GAVIN
What is the government?

FATHER
The government is the people that make all the
decisions and control things.

GAVIN
Will they take my money?

FATHER
Not right now, buddy.  But, they will when you
are older.

GAVIN
OK.  Well, when they come, I will fight them.

FATHER
Really?  You want to fight the government?

GAVIN
Yes.  When they come to our house, I Will fight
them. . . like this:

GAVIN takes a karate stance (in this chair) and chops
and kicks into the air.

FATHER
OK, buddy.  You fight the government.

GAVIN
Will they take my toys, too?

FATHER
No, buddy.  They will not take your toys.

GAVIN
OK.

  1. This is a true exchange, as occurred this morning, en route to my son’s school.

  2. I love the way kids make sense of the world.
